The New York-based Russian American Foundation (RAF) is pleased to announce that Glen Cove High School junior GraceAnne Woods has been selected for a prestigious SportsUnited: Basketball Ambassadors of Today and Tomorrow full scholarship overseas exchange trip and will travel to Russia from April 22 to May 1, 2016. GraceAnne and 12 other finalists will engage with overseas peers through the common bond of basketball, expanding understanding of each other’s culture and country, while advancing their skills in becoming open-minded and successful citizens in today’s global world.
This initiative is funded by the SportsUnited division of the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, (ECA), and is administered by RAF in collaboration with Andrei Kirilenko’s initiative School 2.0, with the support of Russia’s national Student Basketball Association and the U.S. Embassy in Moscow.
“Giving the citizens of our two countries an opportunity to learn from each other and realize that we share the same goals and hopes for the future is at the center of all of RAF’s programs. We are thrilled to bring this life-transforming opportunity to New York’s students and coaches.” - Rina Kirshner, Vice President, Russian American Foundation
“Learning about different cultures is such an important part of life. I am happy to partner with RAF, in order to make the globe a little bit smaller for some special young people and coaches.” - Timofey Mozgov (Cleveland Cavaliers)
SportsUnited, ECA’s division devoted to sports diplomacy, taps into sports diplomacy’s ability to increase dialogue and cultural understanding between people around the world. Sports Diplomacy is an integral part of building relations between the United States and other nations. Participation in sports teaches leadership, teamwork, and communication skills that help young people succeed in all areas of their lives.
